The dead watch as Emely returns to the place that began them all. To help her remember, they push the stone of halite closer to the quartz. Sister Women, her grandmother says, you who are alive, you who are dead, we sing you our song of prayer.

Women around the world immediately respond. They pick up their stones, warm them in their hands, then speak. “Yes, Sister,” they reply, “we hear you.”

When Amely was over the river our Mother tried to talk to her with the voice of water, but the girl was too frightened to hear.

The women take up a chant, speaking all together: “Flinders Range in Australia, Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, the Greek island of Crete . . . these are our sacred holy places.”

But none are so holy as this place, Emely’s grandmother responds. It is Amely’s first night here in these trees. It’s time for her to hear the voice of air.
